The third day of the 18 footer Europeans provided challenging sailing with most teams going for the smaller no.2 rigs expecting the traditional Garda winds which never fully appeared. As a result tactics ruled the day and for many teams the ability to keep the boats planing while trying to hold off the charge from the Danish and German boats that had elected to plug in their big no.1 rigs.
The first race saw the leading pack of Pica, Yandoo, The Black Dog, Carsington and CST breaking out of a big hole in the breeze at the leeward mark to secure a commanding lead only to see the race abandoned as most of the fleet parked at the leeward mark. Thankfully the wind proved more consistent in the following races and once a clean start was made the first race got away with Eurolink using there no.1 rig pulling out a solid lead over Yandoo and CST.
Race 2 saw the normal race for the cliffs with teams hoping to utilize the gusty conditions, with teams having to put in even more effort and concentration than would be normal for these boats some carnage ensured with team Pandion colliding with team LED snapping there bowsprit and putting a hole in the underside of there own deck. That said Woody´s team sailing Yandoo were able to make the most of the conditions and take the bullet with CST in second and Original Chia in third.
The final race of the day saw UK team PICA making the most of the upwind shifts and gusts to pull out a much needed bullet and maintain there current lead in the standings with Eurolink in second and CST in third. Again racing with not without incident as The black dog collected team Gill in an unfortunate tacking incident. Overall the standings are very tight and racing tomorrow should hopefully see classic Garda conditions.
