Posted By norbert peter on 19 Jun 2007 02:59 AM Hello, Patrick,
for me, the whole bundle looks fine, even the grandfather-rule that's for most of the European teams important (even AUS, i believe there are no more than 6 boats build that are conform to the new mould)
If any one will be so keene on winning the JJ, he 'll train so hard and intensive, he will sooner or later by a new boat. For me its enough to go for the second, hahaha (just a little joke)
Will all known boats be grandfathered on a special date(registration) or will there be the chance to show up later with new "found" or modified (shape, other rudder or centerbord) also?
From my point of view its a good compromize, it will hurt every class a little, the Australians and the Europeans but thats the soul of a compromize. I'ld go for it, because we win the big chance to get out of the twilight-zone and become a worldwide class with more people to attract.

To be 1 big world class, for me, it's the best one sailing class can have! Divide ourself is nosense... Let's say in the last 3 years no "new" boats have been made, just after UTI nobody tried to build something new, foiled apart. Let's go together to a unified direction must be the best way for the future. I think it is also the only way for new people and new crews to come inside and renovate the class for the next years! Dear all, As you probably know/hear about, since 4 years I'm joining some meetings with John, Howie and Andy in order to try to build a worldwide class, regrouping all the 18 foot skiffs in the world. Today, I would like to share with you some points discussed during the last meeting, because I have the feeling that we are closed to the point where we will have to decide if we want to join or not. 1) Board -------- In order to prepare a proposal including a structure, a constitution and a set of rules, a board was created. Members of this board are - Andy Richard, representing the UK - John Winning, representing the AUS - Howie Hamlin, representing the US - the NZ class representative - myself, representing the EU On top of that, a chairman has been elected by the board : Don Roach, as well as an official measurer : Steve Quigley Note that Steve has no decision right and Don only have a casting vote. So there is no Australian domination here. Flemming was also present to the last meeting, but had no voting right. 2) Rules / Hull --------------- The idea is to go for a monotype hull, that could evolve in the future but in a controled matter (i.e decide that new hull will be used in x years in advance, in order for the team to have time to plan) As a first design, as you could imagine, we will go for the lastest Murray design, with the latest frame set (if I'm not wrong 2006 version). We have a mould available for building hull in Europe, as well as the full specification for carbon, frame, drying time ... Andy and myself will put in place a tender soon. If you have some suggestion of good boat builders, please send me the contact to include them in this process. I think we should find a small / mid-size company as the number of hulls won't be big. 3) Grandfathering ----------------- All the boats, that are not built using the latest Murray mould (i.e including also Murray built before the last modification) or not using the rudder / centerboard coming out of the official moulds will be grandfathered (no exception). A grandfathered boat will be authorized to sail any competition around the world. The only limitation is that a grandfathered boat would not be able to win the world championship (i.e the JJ Trophy). I think this is a reasonable compromise (and probably the best we would obtain). I would like to have your feedback about this specific point (answer to this post in the forum or send me an email if you prefer staying anonymous) 4) World Championship --------------------- The JJ Trophy will be the world championship of the class and will travel each year from a fleet to another fleet (AUS, NZ, UK, EU, US). Physically, because of its value, the trophy will stay in Sydney but it will be raced around the world. EU proposed to have the first outside Australia JJ in Europe, in Carnac (I hope in 2009). But we could still change our mind 5) Class structure ------------------ - The new class will use the ISAF template (so if one day the class decide to become a member, a good part of the job will then be done) - Each boat will have one vote - The class will be organized by fleet (similar to the Star association) These are the main topics ... when the board will have the proposal ready, we will have to decide if we join or not. Then the board will disapear. I'm trying to do my best to defend our interests and find the best compromises, but nothing is perferct of course. So please share your thoughts here ... |
